                                     1958 Splitscreen Campervan

My name is Dougal and this is my life story so far. I was born in Germany in 1958, where I spent my childhood.
My dad was called Fredrick and he worked at the Volkswagen factory, as an engineer. My mum was called Helga and she worked as a seamstress at a local factory.
I was a product of them getting married in 1957 and then I was born in 1958. I went to VDUB school in Germany up to the age of 16. I loved a lot of subjects at school, and my favourites were History and Travel. I think it was in my DNA that I wanted to travel to a different country. A place where it was warm and most importantly dry. I found the German weather very wet and cold, especially in winter.
I had a plan to travel to a nice warm country, so I put a lot of countries names in a hat and drew a countries name out at random. That country was called Indonesia. I was excited to travel there, but I had to tell my mum and dad! I was afriad to tell them, but I did and they were very supportive. I remember my dad telling me that grandad spent ALL his life in Germany and at 50 years old his exhaust went very rusty and fell off! No man wants his exhaust pipe to rot and fall off, and I certainly didn't.
I saved money and eventually went to Indonesia by boat. I settled down over there very quickly while adapting to the warm weather. I worked with other VDUBS out there and loved it. I made friends with a family out there who looked after me for some 51 years. This new family fell on hard times and had to sell me to a man in the UK, who looked after me for 2 years. So in 2009 I was sold.
A lady then offered the man some money for me and he accepted. I had a new owner. Lucy, my new owner, had a young family and she looked after me the best. She gave me a new purpose to chug down the road, with a new makeover, engine and lots of other things. Lucy looked after me the best of all. Lucy had a young family and with all work commitments she couldn't take me for a spin as often as I would have liked. It was with a very heavy heart that she advertised me. I was sad, but at the same time excited to have another owner who would care for me as much as Lucy had.
I was very excited when Andy & Suzy  bought me, a lovely caring couple who had a plan to continue to look after me and put me in a purpose built house for me to live in out of all the wet weather.
Very soon after Andy & Suzy had bought me we all travelled to a a VW show, called Busfest. It was here that I made loads of new friends and I joined the VWT2OC. I even saw a few old friends there, vans that I had not seen in many years.
Andy & Suzy have now had me restored with a new engine and other bits and pieces, so now I am as new as I can be. I still have my unique personallity which I believe makes me different from the rest of my Splitscreen buddies. I now work for a living transporting people, cakes and bakes for weddings, and sometimes I attend the making of TV and film productions!
My main job is to attend weddings as a cupcake/baking vehicle where I supply all the lovely guests with fantastic cupcakes and vintage sweets which are given out to the many guests at the wedding. I am also great as a vintage photo booth, where guests can sit in me with silly wigs, glasses and hats on! They make me laugh when they get dressed up! With the photos Andy takes of the guests he puts the photos in a vintage wedding book so the guests can write a lovely message for the Bride & Groom and then this is presented to the happy couple.
